Review: ‘Fruit and Nut’ not as delightful as its title

The not-so-funny off-beat comedy, ‘Fruit and Nut’, which released this Friday, doesn’t seem to have turned out the way it must have been desired to be. Kunal Vijaykar`s ‘Fruit & Nut’ is a spoof on India’s amusing socio-political state, but overall the film fails to get as interesting as its subject and its title, of course.
This one is the story of a nerd (Cyrus Broacha), who’s extremely hard on luck, but a day comes when he becomes an overnight celebrity. He manages to get the unexpected instant fame after he rescues a VIP played by Dia Mirza. Together they take on a lunatic Maharaja (Boman Irani), an evil builder (Mahesh Manjrekar) and a self-obsessed scientist (Rajit Kapoor) – who all want to take over Mumbai for different reasons.

Despite a few rib-tickling sequences like a few inoffensive spoofs on some Bollywood bigwigs, Kunal fails to come up with a gripping comedy in this one. Cyrus appears to be making a lot of effort to emulate the latest comedy king of Bollywood- Akshay Kumar. Boman Irani evokes laughs as the Maharaja, but his dialogue delivery tends to get repetitive after a point. Mahesh Manjrekar’s mix of English and Hindi gibberish is unbeatably funny. Dia Mirza looks hot but doesn’t do much to be appreciated for anything else.

On the whole, this one ends up as a monotonous comedy.

Rating: Two cheers
