Are Indian women ready for beachwear?
Updated on Saturday, November 07, 2009, 19:35 IST
New Delhi: When Ritu Sen, 23, went on a holiday to the Andaman islands, she was the only Indian woman in a swimsuit while others on the beach either wore salwar kameez or saris. This was despite the many Indian designers who are launching chic beach and resort wear collections.
When designers Rina Dhaka, Sanchita, Hemant-Nandita, Ranna Gill, Parvesh-Jai, Ashima-Leena showcased flowing floral gowns, dresses, kaftans, swimsuits, bikinis on the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) ramp, former beauty queen-turned-actress Gul Panag felt it was a waste.

"So much beachwear! One would be forgiven for thinking this is Ibiza not India! Really, what is the percent of ladies hitting the beach here?" Gul, who was appointed as the Twitter face of WIFW, posted on the micro-blogging site.

According to Hemant of young designer duo Hemant and Nandita, while resort wear is catching up among Indian women, beachwear will take time to pick up in the country.

"Beachwear is getting popular among designers, but its sales won`t pick up in India very soon. There aren`t too many beaches here in our country and women are still conscious about wearing such clothes in India unlike abroad where it is considered mainline. But this time our resort wear has got a good response from Indian stores like Ogaan and Aza," Hemant told IANS.

While resort wear consists of casual and loose kaftans, sarongs, skirts and light evening gowns to wear on a holiday, beachwear comprises sheer dresses, swimsuits, bikinis, hot pants et al.

Despite the growing manufacture of these clothes, it is mainly bought by people from Europe and the Middle East -- especially from Switzerland, Kuwait and Bahrain, said Hemant.

If Preeti Marwah of south Delhi-based boutique Feminique Apparels is to be believed, the demand for resort wear is on a sudden high in metros like New Delhi and Mumbai.

"There is a lot of demand for resort wear in local markets, especially for kaftans and tunics with floral prints. We add stonework and beadwork to it to add a little Indian touch to these clothes and customers are readily buying these because they are easy attires. Our resort line starts around Rs.1,500," she said.

Parvesh-Jai, another designer duo, started with couture six years ago and gradually shifted to resort wear owing to the growing demand internationally. Now they have begun to sense the demand for such clothes in India as well.

"When we started, India was not ready for such clothes and the market was very niche. Now with the changing lifestyle of people and thanks to super rich people who love to holiday, resort wear has become popular in India too. But I would say the country is still not ready for beachwear," said Jai.

"Although young girls are comfortable in swimwear, most women here still prefer full swimsuits rather than a two-piece bikini set," he added.

This was evident when many raised eyebrows after Parvesh-Jai showcased itsy-bitsy swimwear on the ramp.

Looking at the many Bollywood movies that released this year and the number of actresses who flaunted sexy bikinis in those movies, one may think that the Indian audience has accepted skin show -- but certainly not after hearing the experience of Ritu Sen, who is a frequent traveller.

She says she was quite upset to see the reaction of the locals as well as tourists when she went to chill out at the Havelock beach in the Andaman islands in a full swimsuit.

"Though the beaches were resplendent, most Indian women were dressed in salwar suits or saris. I was the only one wearing proper beach wear (swimsuit) and I was standing out.

"On top of that, middle-aged uncles and their wives were staring at me and even clicking pictures, making me conscious. Then how does one expect women to be comfortable in such clothes in India?" she asked.

well said Anupam, from Kolkata and Ashok, from Delhi. I support u, we need to stay aside against these moral police or culture vultures. - Animesh Gupta - Mangalore
Its a big hipocracy to talk about women empowerment by criticising/curtailing thier independence in deciding to go for beach wear on a beach & terming the same as being against Indian culture. If u want to swim u definitely need to be attired appropriately. If u wish to visit Havlock & swim in a Saree then it would be definitely against BEACH CULTURE!By the way who gave them the right to be Moral police exponents.I'm sure the same persons who have talked about morality & Indian culture are definitely sick! - ashok - new delhi
The modern girls are concerned about exposing maximum, if the culture allows it they will do that. But india had good culture which is entirely different from western culture. I don't know why these girls are trying to destruct the values of india. Those who make swimwear and bikinis are from foreign and they are concerned only about making profits. we the indians should concerned about the values of india and should fight against these vulgar culture. - A wellwisher of india'a future - Kochi
Everything has a start & if we look at this incident as a start, we should encourage it rather preventing it on the name of "Culture and Values". I think we all know that the rate of women being molested or raped is much higher in India, compared to "The West". So the problem here, is about our views, which doesn't include Culture and Values. If we have any problem on swim wares, we should cure it and obviously not impose "fatwas" on women who want to wear these. - Anupam Banerjee - Kolkata
If you have it flaunt it ....!!!?? Well this is the typical stand most of the perverted people take stand. I would be happy if the lady who is designing beach wear also flaunts her body on the ramp.., its easy to tell others to shed clothes but tough to even think of taking out your own...; do it lady.. you have it so flaunt it... - Sachin - Bangalore
Hi...Ritu..dunno if ur reding tis....but i surly agree wid ya...u knw y those uncles and aunties wer lookin @ ya...coz they wer feellin pity fr u... they hav brains in their heads...and those aunties can think...and diffrentiate...between wht da west giv's em and our own culture ...no women can get respect shediiin her clothes..... but ur sure to turn a few heads around...hey guess wht we feel more comfortable...wid any thing on...try tht next tym u visit da beach...u wud get some more attension...may be u can sign up for a film or two...gud luck - raggs - riyadh

We should be proud of our culture and that's wahy we stand united along with our diversity. I believe there is no empowerment of woman lying in clothing. In short if we are bad others are worst - Jaspal - UAE
Hello people, I strongly & strongly agree with the people who have commented / opposed over Ritu's wear, these kind of women r not called as women of India wheather they r actress or models, they r the shame of India which is a pride country in technology, the freedom fighters chased westeners but these kind of people who like western clothes (especially beach wear) & their lifestyle invite & spread compost in the country. Moving forward shld b in education, behaviour, manners & mainly Unity not Nudity. Regarding this female she want's hereself to b highlighted in public, if some director or producer c her, he may offer her for any serial or films. Some people can understand these things only wen his wife, sister or daughter does these disgraceful actions. Showing off body is no where allowed in any religion, it just creates vulgarity & leads to rapes on innocents & not these b.t.h.s as seen & known by media, it gives a bad impact on children. God only save the world & our children. - TAJ - Doha
It is sad that we have lost confidence in ourselves. today we feel proud to follow west. I agree we do have some problems rather many problems. we should not comment on somebody's independece. showing your naked body in public is not liberation rather ....... think about it. - Manoj - USA
We Indians have own clothing system. Instead of following the west when it comes to dressing up, why cant Indians be proud of what we are? We are not talking about technology or economy. I actually think liberation is the downfall of women. I am not saying women should be covered up but women should dress modestly. The reason why women in the west dress up half naked or go full naked outside is to attract men. I think the west should start following Indian culture cause you know our culture is one of the most ancient. We as Indians should be proud of it. Copying somebody else is done to go with the flow but then would you jump off a cliff if somebody in the west did it? Not only that people in the west mostly have light skin. Can Indians turn white? NO because Indians who are mostly brown skinned by genetics would never turn white. So be proud of what you are. - Indian - U.S
This so called empowerement with bikini & baring is just for the lust of this so called psychic minds, instead of creating these sort of empowerement it is better to empower our womens with education & jobs. - hithesh - Mangalore
There are two types of people who live in India. One, the urban moderates, who try to follow the western culture and the others who are still Indians even though we got independence 60 years back. The later half are more in strength but the former half rule India bcoz they have the power and money. The question of Fashion show and wearing bikini is for the former half but you can see the later half are already half clad when they work to earn for thier food. We are changing in a rapid pace.I agree. U can see, both of them are in the same style, one with bikini for thier pleasure where as the other with a dress which is suitable for thier working style. Leave it to those wear their dress.Let them choose. But you plz choose not to disturb both of them because let every one feel free in what they want to wear. Dont you dare to stare at both of them. THIRU-VIZAG - thiru - Vizag
These all cries for liberation is not to empower the women , but to make them naked and enjoy their lust, All these american and western traditions are just made to make the woman shameless in the name of liberation. Any one can enjoy with woman, our Indian tradition says be with own woman, Western says be for All woman. Faaltu people and Faaltu ke traditions, people Jaa go before your own wife runs with others!! Jai Hind!! - Rehaan - Goa
With Malice to none and All. All those who are saying about the western thought and beach wear are perverts to see women naked on sea beach. Would u allow your sister , mother and wife to have beach wear and play around there??? Forget about western world see what are the negative impacts of their society and the causes around it. The Indian Culture and values doesnt permit beachwear at the present time. Come out of 2050 and live in 2009 u guys. In 2109 u wont eat the food and spices u are eating now they would be outdated , does it mean that I wont eat the current food now and will live with tablets , energy drinks and all other junk stuffs now??? Agreed that women have a freedom as like a man. But every freedom has a price to pay and all know what price i am talking about. So long as the society doesnt reach upto that level of thought u cant put into practice taking a shortcut deleting one step while making a progress.    Why is such hue and cry around?? Everyone must know that we are in a 21st century, when the new generation has come up with mobiles, fashion and new ideas, so we have to accept that new takes over old. Near beaches everyone should have a beachwear and not so called salwar or sari as its a old tradition and u can't continue with old things over and then. We have to be enough mature though we think a lot of our traditional culture. Its not important that we talk on covering our body by clothes or exposing them. Its about freedom and the way that we should carry on. We are far behind from the thinking of west, coz we have our old values which still remains. The next generation tat is coming will definitely change and such pity things like wearing beachwear would be only a small thing. A change should be there and everyone should welcome it, if the world is going for a change then let the change happen, why do we indians always wakeup late? Why do we have to copy music, movies everything from the West? Its only becz of our old traditions and old customs, which we should leave far behind and think about new changes, adapting new styles, fashion and new creative ideas. A place with new change will always be appreciated as the time has come for a change and every indian girl should be proud of it. - KARAN - GUJARAT
