|
Aamir was born in Mumbai, into a Muslim family that has been actively involved in the Indian film-industry. His father Tahir Hussain is a producer; his uncle Nasir Hussain was a director. He has also acted in a few films directed by his cousin Mansoor Khan. Aamir began school at St Annes, Bandra and shifted to Bombay Scottish School when in std. VIII. He completed his junior college from Narsee Monjee College, Vile Parle, Mumbai.
He first made an appearance as a child actor in Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973) and Madhosh (1974). Eleven years later; he made his adult acting debut in a role that went quite unnoticed in Ketan Mehta`s Holi (1984).

Aamir Khan’s first production Venture Lagaan, was nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 74th Academy Awards. The film also gathered critical acclaim at several international film festivals, apart from winning numerous Bollywood awards, including National Film Award. Khan himself won his second Filmfare Best Actor Award for it.
- In Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra`s award-winning, Rang De Basanti, Aamir’s role was critically acclaimed, earning him a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance and various nominations for Best Actor. The film went on to become one of the highest grossing films of the year, and was also selected as India`s official entry to the Oscars.
- Although the film was not shortlisted as a nominee, it received a nomination for Best Foreign Film at the BAFTA Awards in England.
- Awarded Padma Bhushan for the year 2003 by the Government of India.
- In 2008 Aamir Khan won Filmfare Award for Best Movie and Best Director for Taare Zameen Par. In April of 2008, he received a "Special Award" from Master Dinanath Mangeshkar Smruti Pratisthan for his services to Indian cinema.
